Voices of the Past Speak to the Future

“The Voices of the Past Speak to the Future” is a joint public-private project between the Army Heritage Center Foundation and the Army Heritage and Education Center that is supported by grants from the US Department of Education and private donations. The project encompasses the development of educational programs and teaching materials based on the archival holdings of the Military History Institute and artifacts of the Army Heritage Museum and seeks to:

  • Support research and teaching opportunities in military and social history.
  • Make history accessible and engaging by demonstrating the value of primary source material, in the form of personal diaries, oral histories, personal letters, photographs and artifacts from the Army Heritage and Education Center.

The Military History Institute is one of the world’s largest repositories of primary source materials for American and military history, reflecting the nation’s rich cultural heritage from colonial times to the present. As the Army’s archive for its non-official history, the Institute holds over fourteen million items that document the history of the United States, the U.S. Army and military history. The Institute collects, organizes, preserves and makes available source materials on U.S. military history to the American public, educators, students, academic researchers and the defense community to foster a greater understanding of the army’s role in our nation’s history and its future.

The Army Heritage Museum will feature a comprehensive collection of artifacts, displays and interpretive history. As the museum expands, the displays will tell the story of the American soldier and the U. S. Army. Through the accounts of individuals and units, showcasing acts of sacrifice and bravery, triumphs and trials, darkest hours and shining moments -- in times of peace and war – the Museum will highlight nearly 230 years of American history in multidimensional detail.
