National History Day in Pennsylvania
The
National History Day, the nation’s leading program
for history education, selected the Army Heritage Center
Foundation, as the sponsor for the 2009 National History
Day in Pennsylvania program and contest.
Between
800 and 900 students in grades six through twelve are expected
to enter next year’s state competition in May 2009
at Millersville University. Whether students live in rural
or urban areas, attend private or public schools or are
home-schooled, students will apply the skills of a historian
as they conduct research for projects they hope will take
them to the national competition held in June in College
Park, Maryland.
The
Foundation gratefully acknowledges the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
who, through its Department of Economic and Community Development,
awarded a grant of $100,000 for the Commonwealth’s
2008 state program. The grantallowed the Foundation to increase
the level of participation in the NHD in PA program to more
than more than 800 students.
National
History Day (NHD) is an educational program, now in its
35th year, devoted to improving the teaching and learning
of history in American schools. NHD is a meaningful way
for students to study historical issues, ideas, people and
events by engaging in historical research. Students choose
a topic related to an annual theme and conduct extensive
primary and secondary research. Students present their work
in original papers, exhibits, performances, web sites and
documentaries. In the spring, these projects are entered
into competitions at local, state and national levels. The
program culminates with the national competition that will
be held in June 2009 at the University of Maryland at College
Park.
