The Army Heritage Center Foundation is partnering with the Gettysburg Foundation to promote the Gettysburg Coin Act. The Act would produce a commemorative coin in 2013 recognizing the 150th anniversary of the 1863 Battle of Gettysburg and President Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. Proceeds from sales of the commemorative coin would benefit two mid-state foundations – the Army Heritage Center Foundation in Carlisle, Pennsylvania and the Gettysburg Foundation in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Senator Casey recently proclaimed “…The Army Heritage Center Foundation continues the proud tradition of protecting and preserving our Nation’s rich military history…[The AHEC] works…to…preserve the memories of Soldiers and their Families, honor their service, and help educate the American public about the Army’s contribution to our nation. The Army Heritage Center Foundation’s support for the 150th Anniversary commemorative coin is just another way they continue to fulfill their mission.” The Army Heritage and Education Center is a 56-acre military history, educational and cultural campus located at Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania. The complex is being developed to honor the service and sacrifice of Soldiers and their Families by sharing their personal stories; to preserve and make available for study artifacts and archival materials; and to educate and inspire visitors. The AHEC mission is to begin "Telling the Army Story…one Soldier at a time." The Army Heritage Center Foundation has achieved its first benchmark goal of funding Phase One of the Visitor and Education Center—a $12 million capital project for which construction began in August 2009! Phase One of the Visitor and Education Center (VEC) will provide a 37,000 square foot facility that will include the AHEC's first exhibit and interpretive gallery and urgently needed public space for educational programs, veterans’ reunions, and other public gatherings. Phase One will also include a store and other support services for visitors. The construction of Phase One of the Visitors and Education Center was funded through donations from numerous private individuals, corporations and foundations as well as grants and other financial support from Cumberland County and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The AHEC is open to the public for tours and for research. See www.usahec.org for hours and directions. |
