Seven hundred ninety (790) students grades 6-12 came to the National History Day in Pennsylvania State Contest at Millersville University on May 12 and 13, 2010, to compete for the opportunity to represent Pennsylvania at the Kenneth E. Behring National History Day Contest. Fifty-nine (59) were selected from among an outstanding field of competitors to serve on the Pennsylvania Delegation to the national contest, which will be held at the University of Maryland, College Park, MD, on June 13 through 17, 2010.
This competition marks the culmination of a year-long program of historical research and discovery. Approximately 6,000 students throughout the Commonwealth conducted research, analyzed historical sources to reach conclusions, and developed projects to demonstrate what they learned about topics of their own choosing. Relating their topics to this year’s theme of Innovation: Impact and Change, they created projects in one of five categories: historical papers, websites, documentaries, performances, and exhibits. Presented at one of eleven regional contests, the best were selected to attend the state contest.
Over the two-days of the state contest, the students presented their research to the teachers, professors, and professional historians who volunteered to serve as judges. In all, 117 judges and volunteers donated their time to make the state contest possible. The winners will move on to the National Contest at the University of Maryland at College Park, MD, in June.
National History Day is an internationally recognized program of academic excellence that engages students in a positive learning environment and enhances student achievement.
National History Day in Pennsylvania is sponsored by the Army Heritage Center Foundation, located in Carlisle, PA, and National History Day, Inc.
