Ends of War: The Unfinished Fight of Lee’s Army after Appomattox with Professor Caroline Janney

Caroline E. Janney will discuss that Lee’s surrender was less an ending than the start of a period of discontinuity marked by military and political uncertainty, legal and logistical confusion, and continued outbursts of violence. Professor Janney will take listeners from the deliberations of government and military authorities to the ground-level experiences of common soldiers and the long-term effects of the period on the Nation and perceptions of the Civil War. Professor Janney was the recipient of the 2022 Lincoln Prize is awarded annually for the finest scholarly work in English on Abraham Lincoln, the American Civil War soldier, or a subject relating to their era.
