Army Heritage Days, scheduled for May 17 & 18, 2014, is a timeline living history event, which examines nearly every era of U.S. Army history.

The U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center (USAHEC) is excited to announce its annual Army Heritage Days Event is back this year and bigger than ever!  Army Heritage Days, scheduled for May 17 & 18, 2014, is a timeline living history event, which examines nearly every era of U.S. Army history.  This year's event features an expanded look at World War I and showcases living historians representing Soldiers from before the French and Indian War through the Vietnam War. After a hiatus, over 200 re-enactors from all periods are eager to return to the Army Heritage Trail to bring Army history to life once again.

Throughout the two day event, historical equipment, vehicles, gear, and live demonstrations will fill USAHEC’s Army Heritage Trail. New additions in 2014 include the unique experience of a World War I bi-plane flyover, and a two-day military music tattoo program, featuring performances of military and patriotic music by local and historical bands.  While Army Heritage Days will feature exciting new programming, some favorites from the past several years will return, including the used book sale, the children’s passport activity, and the meet and greet with Army veterans from WWII through current operations.

The majority of activities occur on USAHEC’s outdoor Army Heritage Trail, but both days offer additional events inside the Visitor and Education Center (VEC).  The hallways and exhibit spaces in the VEC will be full of displays, activities, and demonstrations with lectures from notable military historians topping the list of indoor attractions. As always, the USAHEC museum store will be open.

Army Heritage Days 2014 is a FREE event and includes FREE parking.  The event opens to the public at 9:00 AM on Saturday, May 17 and on Sunday, May 18.  The event will end at 5:00 PM both days, as well.  Food vendors, including USAHEC’s Café Cumberland, will offer a wide variety of refreshments.  For more information, please call 717-245-3972 or visit www.usahec.org.

Come learn about the exciting world of living history and reenactment at the U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center (USAHEC) in Carlisle, Pennsylvania!

Come learn about the exciting world of living history and reenactment at the U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center (USAHEC) in Carlisle, Pennsylvania! The Center is pleased to invite the public and living historians to attend the third annual Reenactor Recruitment Day on Saturday, February 8, 2014 from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM in the USAHEC Visitor and Education Center. The event will feature forty-one living history organizations representing impressions covering all eras of U.S. Army and world military history, from 16th Century pike men to Vietnam War era grunts. The event serves as a “meet and greet” for reenactors to interact between their organizations and for the public to learn more about the historic periods each group represents. In addition, the Recruiting Day provides a great opportunity for reenactors to fill their ranks with history buffs.

Over two hundred reenactors will be on hand in their period attire to answer questions, talk about their upcoming events, discuss the finer points of reenacting, and show off their military accoutrements. A Civil War era team will display a fully loaded-for-battle fiberglass horse to represent horse cavalry of the time. From 19th century artillery to Wehrmacht medics, the sheer diversity of periods represented is sure to entertain children and hard-core historians alike. Some organizations will perform live demonstrations of the manual of arms from their time period, troop movements, and battlefield medical techniques.

The third annual Reenactor Recruiting Day is free and open to the public. USAHEC’s main exhibit, “The Soldier Experience,” will be open, as will the bookstore and the Café Cumberland. The bookstore will also be holding a used book sale. Parking is free. For directions, general information, upcoming events, and the event flyer, please visit the USAHEC website at www.usahec.org. The U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center (USAHEC) is pleased to announce the
extension of the entry deadline for its Photo Contest!

The U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center (USAHEC) is pleased to announce the extension of the entry deadline for its Photo Contest!  Photography has long played an important role in U.S. Army history, and now USAHEC wants you to submit your own Army-related photographs for the USAHEC Photo Contest!  Due to widened interest, this event will now run until March 31, 2014 and is open to photos which highlight life in the Army, both past and present.

Participants may submit photos in the following six categories: Army Soldiers, Army Family, Army Leadership, Army Equipment, Historical Place Related to Army History, and Digitally Altered Photographs.  There are four age classifications within the contest, and entrants will compete within their own group: Elementary School, Middle School, High School, or Adult.  Photos entered into the contest must be submitted by the person who took them; this can include pictures taken during service from World War II through Current Operations.  Prizes will be awarded for each category and in each age group.  There will also be one prize for best overall photograph.  Final judging and prizes distribution will occur at a special ceremony during USAHEC’s Army Heritage Days event in May 2014.

This contest is free and open to current residents of Pennsylvania or individuals currently affiliated with the United States Army War College, Carlisle Barracks, and all other Active Army or Reservist/Pennsylvania National Guard Installations located in Pennsylvania.  For more information on age groups, categories, and a complete list of rules, please see the Official Photo Contest page on the USAHEC website (www.carlisle.army.mil/ahec/event/PhotoContest.cfm) or call 717-245-3972.
