This is the most comprehensive book on the old Austo-Hungarian Navy and fleet I have ever found. It traces the fleet from the 18th century through 1918. Naturally, it covers the battle of Lissa in 1866. This is followed by descriptions of the evolution of the ship designs of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The text is accompanied by a very good collection of period black and white photos. There are also several good maps of the Adriatic, Cattaro, and the Otranto area in WW I. Pages 133 – 135 contain a short description of the sinking of the battleship “Szent Istvan.” A couple of Appendices provide brief tabulations of dimensions, armament, armor thicknesses, and performance characteristics of the ships. Appendix III contains an interesting comparison of the naval budgets of the various international naval powers of 1905, 1910, and 1914.
