CARLISLE WILL HONOR THE NATION’S WAR DEAD ON MAY 26 WITH A PARADE, CEREMONY

Army Heritage Center Foundation President to Deliver Memorial Day Message

(Carlisle) – Area residents will have the opportunity to pay their respects to the men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces who died in defense of their country by attending a parade and ceremony on Monday, May 26 in downtown Carlisle.

“Memorial Day is a solemn holiday, not for celebrating, but for remembering,” said Kirk Wilson, president of the Carlisle Joint Veterans Council. “We are pleased to host the parade and ceremony again this year.”

Julie Germany, president of the Army Heritage Center Foundation (AHCF), will deliver the Memorial Day message.  The foundation is a private, nonprofit organization which seeks to preserve soldier stories and promote the U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center.

Ms. Germany moved to Carlisle in 1997 when her father was stationed at the Army War College.   Today she is also involved in the local community, serving on the Downtown Carlisle Association’s promotions committee and as a trustee of the Cumberland County Historical Society.  Central Pennsylvania Business Journal has named her a Woman of Influence.

As part of the ceremony at Veterans Memorial Courtyard, she will also participate in a wreath laying.  The Cumberland County Veterans Honor Guard will offer a 21-gun salute and taps.   Music will be provided by the Carlisle Town Band and the Carlisle High School Band.

The parade begins at 9:00 a.m.   It starts on North Hanover Street at North Street, proceeding south, turning right on West Pomfret Street, then right on South Pitt Street to West High Street where it disbands.

The ceremony starts following the parade at about 9:45 a.m.
