Army Heritage Center Foundation President Julie Germany announced today that MG John L. Gronski (Ret.) has accepted the Carlisle, Pa.-based foundation’s invitation to join the foundation’s board of directors.
Major General John L. Gronski is a retired United States Army officer and a veteran of the Iraq War, serving from 1978 to 2019. He attained the rank of major general. His decorations included two awards of the Army Distinguished Service Medal, two awards of the Legion of Merit, and the Bronze Star Medal.
A native of Scranton, PA, he attended the University of Scranton, completing the school’s Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps program and receiving his commission as a second lieutenant. After initial service at Fort Benning, Georgia and Fort Lewis, Washington, Gen. Gronski continued his military service with the Pennsylvania Army National Guard and became qualified in the Infantry Branch; in addition to the Infantry Officer Advanced Course, he completed the Airborne course, Ranger School, the United States Army Command and General Staff College and United States Army War College. In addition, he completed a Master of Business Administration degree at Penn State University.
As he advanced through the ranks, Gronski’s command assignments included Company A, 2nd Battalion, 109th Infantry Regiment; 1st Battalion, 109th Infantry Regiment; 55th Infantry Brigade; 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team; and the 28th Infantry Division. He led 2nd Brigade in Ramadi during the Iraq War. After completing his command of the 28th Infantry Division in 2016, Gronski served as the National Guard Deputy Commanding General of United States Army Europe until retiring in 2019.
After retiring from the military, Gronski authored three books, including Iron–Sharpened Leadership and he operates a consulting business that provides leadership advice and training to clients from business and government. “Gen. Gronski is an exciting new addition to our accomplished foundation board,” said Julie Germany, AHCF president. “He brings a wealth of expertise and a leadership-focused approach to our mission to support the U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center (USAHEC). This year, we’ve launched several new initiatives connecting 250 years of Army history with the American public and enhancing USAHEC’s programs and facilities, and we are confident Gen. Gronski will be a force multiplier.”

The U.S. Army Heritage & Education Center (USAHEC), is part of the U.S. Army War College, located in Carlisle, PA. The center collects, preserves, and presents materials related to the evolution and application of land power as well as the experiences of American soldiers, to build a foundation for strategic thought and to connect the public to the U.S. Army.
This year is the 250th birthday of the U.S. Army, which was just celebrated locally on June 14. The foundation supported the 250th through funding the director’s preview for “This We’ll Defend: Celebrating 250 Years of Army History,” the center’s newest exhibit, and hosting a formal dinner.
