(CARLISLE, PA) – Army Heritage Center Foundation President Julie Germany announced today that the nation’s former National Security Advisor H. R. McMaster has accepted the Carlisle, Pa.-based foundation’s invitation to join their National Advisory Council.
McMaster is a retired U.S. Army lieutenant general who served as the 25th National Security Advisor from 2017 to 2018. He is the author of several New York Times’ best-sellers, including At War with Ourselves, Dereliction of Duty, and Battlegrounds: The Fight to Defend the Free World.
“General H.R. McMaster’s commitment to military history, his distinguished service, ethical leadership, and his strategic insight make him an extraordinary addition to our National Advisory Council,” Germany said. “We look forward to working more closely with him to preserve and promote USAHEC’s rich archival and biographical resources, and inspire future generations of Army leaders through the lessons of the past.”
Born in Philadelphia, H. R. McMaster is the Fouad and Michelle Ajami Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University. He is also the Bernard and Susan Liautaud Fellow at the Freeman Spogli Institute and lecturer at Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business.
Upon graduation from the United States Military Academy in 1984, McMaster served as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army for 34 years. He retired as a Lieutenant General in June 2018 after serving as the 25th assistant to the president for National Security Affairs.
He holds a PhD in military history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
McMaster is the host of the video and podcast series, Battlegrounds: Vital Perspectives on Today’s Challenges, and is a regular on GoodFellows, both produced by the Hoover Institution. He is a Distinguished University Fellow at Arizona State University.
The Foundation’s National Advisory Council is tasked with supporting the mission of the Army Heritage Center Foundation, which is the nonprofit partner of the U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center.
The U.S. Army Heritage & Education Center (USAHEC) collects, preserves, and presents materials related to the evolution and application of landpower as well as the experiences of American soldiers, to build a foundation for strategic thought and to connect the public to the U.S. Army.
This year is the 250th birthday of the U.S. Army, which was just celebrated locally on June 14 in Carlisle. The festivities included a 5K, a sweeping new exhibit that is still open to the public, and a formal dinner at the Center. For more information, please visit armyheritage.org.
