This presentation is based on a new book, A Combat Engineer with Patton’s Army: the Fight Across Europe With the 80th “Blue Ridge” Division in World War II. The book is heavily based on engineer records and the letters home written by Sergeant Frank Lembo, a squad leader in the 305th Engineer Combat Battalion. The book describes the engineers’ work in contested river crossings of the Moselle, Seille, and Sauer rivers and the fighting of the 80th Division that the 305th supported, including the relief of Bastogne. It also gives first hand insights into the life of the front-line GI.
