Federal Military Diplomacy: Army Officers and Civil Government on the Early Frontier
Between the 1780s and the War of 1812, army officers sometimes assisted in domestic law enforcement, as well as diplomacy with nearby Indians and international powers, mostly on the western frontiers. They were crucial to securing the U.S. hold on the Northwest Territory in the 1780s and Mississippi in the 1790s, mediating disputes among local inhabitants and integrating them into American government and society.
