The U.S. Army and “the Problem of Race”: Afros, Race-Consciousness, and Institutional Logic

This presentation examines conflicts over hair policy during the Vietnam era as a way to understand the Army’s flexibility and its limits as Army leaders tried to manage the internal racial crisis some called “the war within the war.”

Our presenter is Dr. Beth Bailey, Foundation Distinguished Professor and director of the Center for Military, War, and Society Studies at the University of Kansas. She is the author of several books, including America’s Army: Making the All-Volunteer Force, and co-editor of Beyond Pearl Harbor and Understanding the U.S. Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
