Operation Desert Storm Objective Cobra

August 2, 1950

General Richard A. Cody’s soldier story is one of steadfast commitment, transformational leadership, and enduring service. A 1972 graduate of United States Military Academy at West Point, he commissioned into the Army and ultimately logged over 5,000 flight hours as a master Army aviator rated in more than 19 helicopter types. Early in his career, Cody commanded the 1st Battalion, 101st Aviation Regiment, of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) during Operation Desert Storm—his unit helped neutralize enemy radar sites, paving the way for the air campaign. Cody later served as the Army’s Vice Chief of Staff, carrying the weight of service readiness and transformation. After retirement, Cody continued to serve veterans—chairing boards such as Homes for Our Troops and advising nonprofit causes. General Cody’s story is not just about exalted rank, but about a lifetime of service rooted in the values that make the Army strong—and his example gives tangible meaning to those values for every soldier who follows.
