Preserving forgotten stories.
The West Shore Historical Society (WSHS) acts as the official steward of heritage for the communities of Lemoyne, Wormleysburg, Lower Allen, Hampden, Silver Spring, and Fairview. Founded in 2009 as the “Gateway Historical Society,” the organization was renamed to reflect its growing mission to preserve, interpret, and promote the landmarks and local history of the West Shore. Visitors to this location find a dedicated space for research, community outreach, and an archive of regional artifacts, spanning from the early agricultural days of the Cumberland Valley to its rapid suburban development.
The WSHS is crucial for preserving the “forgotten” stories of the area, notably taking a lead role in the “Save Our Bridge” campaign to restore the historic 114-foot Sheepford Road Bridge, which crosses the Yellow Breeches Creek. A key highlight of their work is the preservation of the Historic Peace Church, which contains a rare 1807 Conrad Doll Organ and sits next to a 350-year-old Witness Tree. By supporting this site, the organization ensures that the unique stories of the West Shore’s growth, including during the Revolutionary War period, are not lost to time.
